I was a little different. After a couple of years or so on BASIC from 1979 onwards, and a very tiny dabble with Pascal, I spent the next four or five years on assembly, both Z80 and 8086. This was followed by a couple of years in COBOL, before I graduated to UNIX and C, where I've been comfortable ever since.
