I'm retired, and the life discussed is a GOAL that people bust their asses and ruin their health for decades to achieve.
I woke up, tried to get some sunrise photos at roughly 32℉ temps (good, not great) and will do whatever the hell I feel like doing today. I just deposited the mandatory IRA distributions, so I may shop, but I was always pretty frugal except for early microcomputers, which led to a nice career in electronic and optical engineering, as well as sysadmin and I.T. jobs that funded the retirement, and cameras, which I enjoy immensely, but still don't go crazy about.
I use the over 50 year old Hasselblad and got the cheapest Nikon Z body. I looked at the 600mm wonder lens with Fresnel elements, but I use a coolpix with 24-3000mm zoom that I got for less than 1/6 the cost of the lens. Smaller sensor, but WTF?
I WILL admit that living the retired life before a busy career is eating dessert before dinner, and I went the conventional route, but there's a good argument that if you find the right kind of work (and I did several over time) it's not exactly fun, but not exactly wage slavery. I think that's the part that most people miss. I did some cool and creative things.
Maybe I'll do some more. The crapolicious internet that some sick minds distorted from the "fun days before dot-com" seems to be falling apart, and it's time to re-invent it.
And I worked at "The Dot in Dot Com". That was fun, too. My "youthful energy" was (mostly) well spent.
Cheers, all hard-working folks.
Stay in good health, so that you can enjoy the "goal".
