- bell-cot 3y ago> [as the fire was spreading into the plane]...some things went wrong. It took several minutes to get the Japan Airlines plane’s doors open. > Japan Airlines said it took some time to get the doors open because cabin attendants first needed the pilot’s confirmation that the airplane had come to a complete stop. The cabin attendants also needed to confirm whether it was safe to evacuate and figure out which slides were usable, an airline spokeswoman said. Obviously, any "people burned alive because the door wouldn't open in the actual emergency" scenario would be double-plus bad. OTOH, I've read accounts of similar-ish emergencies where either (1) the door would not open due to sh*tty design/manufacture/maintenance, or (2) the door was easily opened...allowing smoke/fire into the cabin. I look forward to Admiral Cloudberg's detailed article...probably a few years from now.
