Claudine Gay resigns as Harvard University president
- abozikry 3y agoShould have done that earlier. People weren’t going to let that go and she basically made the whole board look like sh* for trying to run cover for her. Sometimes you need to just rest the room and see the inevitable happening.
- atticora 3y agoI'm not a fan of Gay or Harvard, but the slow hunt and take down by a pack of wolves on tangential issues just made things worse. Her replacement is likely to be a less accurate reflection of Harvard's current culture, and the difference amounts to stealth. So much of the conservative coordination and amplification for this happened on X. There's a good argument that if Musk didn't buy Twitter, this didn't happen. Elon may never make a profit on the investment but he gets extraordinary leverage on the national conversation.
- nailer 3y agoIt's not - or it should not be - a uniquely conservative position that calling for genocide against Jewish people should be considered a violation of the Harvard code of conduct. The biggest disappointment here was the racist administrator was not fired and not fired for racism.

- ProjectArcturis 3y agoAlternatively, if Gay hadn't done all that plagiarism, she'd still be there.
- smacky 3y agoif Gay hadn't done all that plagiarism, she'd never have gotten there.

- gustavus 3y agoOr maybe you know she shouldn't have said that calls to "gas the Jews" requires context to determine if it constituted hate speech. Or if she hadn't plagarized massive amounts of her work continually without accreditation and then threaten retaliation against those that brought up the issue, like in this letter: https://freebeacon.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Complaint2.pdf https://freebeacon.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Complaint2... That might've had something to do with it. But no I think you're right that evil Elon Musk and the ultra-MAGA twitter overlords are the ones who caused her to be kicked out. Not to mention the racism as she said "threats fueled by racial animus." it wasn't her fault she plagiarized it was the evil white patriarchial system that forced her to.
- 303uru 3y agoI find it funny that conservatives want to play the hate isn’t free speech but something that gets you thrown out of school game, because it’ll be the end of conservatives on campus. Funny how a couple years ago shouts of “Jews will not replace us” were defended by the same people who now pretend to give a shit about Jews.
- ImJamal 3y agoI think it is about forcing people to live by their own rules. If you believe hate speech is not free speech then according to your own rules you should be punished if you say or protect hate speech.
- nailer 3y ago> Funny how a couple years ago shouts of “Jews will not replace us” were defended by the same people who now pretend to give a shit about Jews. Of course they weren’t. You’re deliberately confusing the hard right with the mainstream right. It’s just a terrible and transparent tactic as when the right confuses the hard left with the mainstream left.
- ejb999 3y agoalternative opinion: if the board had done what it was should have done in the first place it wouldn't have been left up to social media to do the work for them.
- quantum_state 3y agoShould not the same standard be applied to high positions such as the US president? If it is only based on inconvenience, it begs a deeper question.
- ProjectArcturis 3y agoAs a free people, we the United States are able to elect whatever incompetent moron criminal we choose.
- nailer 3y agoHas the US President called for genocide?
- krapp 3y agoThe US President has pledged unwavering support for Israel, a state currently engaged in genocide, and has vetoed efforts by other countries to call for a humanitarian ceasefire, thus helping the genocide continue unabated, and is sending billions of dollars in weapons to Israel so they don't run out of the means by which to commit further genocide. While he did not literally stand at a podium and utter the phrase "I, Joe Biden, President of the United States, hereby call for genocide," one must be able to read the room.
- nailer 3y ago> The US President has pledged unwavering support for Israel, a state currently engaged in genocide No. There are many Arab countries all over the world, they are safe from Israel, Israel does not want to destroy all arabs in the same way that people want to destroy all Jews. 20% of Israel's population is Arab, there are 400 mosques as most Arabs are muslims, every sign in translated into Arabic then English, and Israeli Arabs have the same rights as Israeli Jews - to healthcare, to vote, to worship who they please, to be safe from sectarian violence, to be elected to parliament. Ask anyone in Tel Aviv and they'll tell you the best hummus isn't in Tel Aviv, but next door in Jafo at Abu Hassan. Arabs in Israel have better lives than Arabs in any Arabic country - compare Israel with say Saudi, where arabs don't have the right to vote, or Gaza where gay people are executed. Arabs in remaining parts of the British mandate (outside Israel and Jordan, ie West Bank and Gaza) started referring to themselves as Palestinian in the 1960 - before then they were simply arabs. Philistines are Greek so obviously arabs are not Philistines. But if you think Palestinian is a genus of people, we can entertain the concept - the population of Gaza has increased 10 fold over the last few years, and Gaza has been left alone since Israel left the country and gave it a 300M/year flower export business in 2005. > has vetoed efforts by other countries to call for a humanitarian ceasefire Most of those called for by the UN allow Hamas to keep the Jewish people they are storing in tunnels. There would be a ceasefire right now if Hamas gave back 40 hostages as requested last week.
