fMRI study ~n=17 showing sub-cortical areas adjacent to scene perception areas with retinotropic relation (tested as lateral, ventral) of mutual suppression, connecting DMN (default mode network), visual perception, and memory/recognition.
Evidence is new but consistent with other studies.
Some quotes to entice readers:
- This analysis revealed that the inhibitory interaction between −pRFs [negative visual population receptive field (pRF)] in PMAs [place memory areas] and +pRFs in SPAs [scene perception area] is structured by a retinotopic code (i.e., is spatially specific) [for N=14,7]
- We found that a spatially-specific, inhibitory interaction between +pRFs in OPA and−pRFs in LPMA persists during familiar scene viewing [where perceptual and memory systems are expected to interact]
- the strength of the negative association between OPA and −pRF activity for stimuli in the contralateral visual field was significantly stronger than the ipsilateral visual field (t(7)=2.71, p=0.03, D=0.95)
