Why I am using Windows 7 machine as a daily driver in 2024?
- spacedrone808 3y agoIn this long read you will find subjective rant towards to “obsolete” Windows 7 and it's comparison with modern Windows.
- mtmail 3y agoDoes Windows 7 still contain recent TLS cyphers? Websites starts to refuse connections with TLS < 1.2.
- ProllyInfamous 3y agoMy only Microsoft machine, Win7, just lost the ability to play GTAIV (Steam stopped Win7 support in 2024, BOO). But it is still my main machine for anything financial or government -related, online. Most "official" websites still allow login/connections — whether legacy (or not) I'm not sure... as I don't need "all the features."
- stuckkeys 3y agowhy not just debloat win11?
- ProllyInfamous 3y agoI bought a pristine N64, today, instead [of playing GTA]... came with 007 and MarioKart64. Craigslist has its miracles. To answer your question on debloating a more modern system: I don't want to [run something so cloud-dependent, requiring self-installed updates]. I turn Win7 on, and it boots in seconds — exactly to my unchanged specification(s). If my main application need was still supported on XP... I'd be running that =D
- stuckkeys 3y agoI guess whatever works. I think the LTSC version of 11 that is coming out later this year should have the bare minimum. I have yet to test it. But yeah, I understand why you choose to stick with 7.
- nullfield 3y agoDo you have solid suggestions for doing this?
- simonblack 3y agoWhy bother, when you can 'just' use Windows 7?
- fragmede 3y agoTLS 1.1 and 1.2 are supported by Windows 7 SP1 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/update-to-enable-tls-1-1-and-tls-1-2-as-default-secure-protocols-in-winhttp-in-windows-c4bd73d2-31d7-761e-0178-11268bb10392 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/update-to-enable-t...
- eva_cananim 3y agoI agree with the sentiment. I loathe windows 10. I ran Windows Server 2016 as a desktop operating system for a while, you can use a trial version for six months, which I found much less annoying but is not a solution to all the issues this guy is complaining about, and driver signing was a hassle.
- simonblack 3y agoWindows 7 is 'Peak Windows'. On my rare forays into Windows, Windows 7 is what I choose to use. As Microsoft declines, so does Windows. Microsoft can't afford to produce a better Windows.
