Self-criticism can be a form of narcissism. And any organization (country, company, sports team, etc.) at the top of the heap is especially prone to looking inward already. When the big boss decides to feel bad about what they’ve done to others, they usually end up reinforcing their self-centered viewpoint. I think it’s quite healthy for Americans to realize just how messed up the history of other countries often is, and in different ways than the US.
