10 Patients die from nurse injecting tap water instead of Fentanyl at hospital
- cushpush 3y agoWow. Very sad -- in theory a nurse would know that tap water is not sterile, unless she or he is hitting some hard substances?
- gus_massa 3y agoThat part is very strange. I expect the nurse to une saline solution that is sterile and essentialy free, nobody will notice a few ml of saline water ara missing.
- Someone 3y agoFTA: “But what Dr. Miller doesn’t understand, is why tap water was allegedly used. She says there should be sterile options available that wouldn’t put patients at risk.” Combined with the fact that nobody has been charged yet, I think it’s possible that a third party made the replacement, not a nurse administering the drug.
- hunglee2 3y ago“You don’t think of medical professionals doing this, but 10% of medical professionals divert drugs. 10%… That’s a lot.” I presume the main motivation is resale of the Fentanyl? Incredibly sad story, we need to get to automate drug administration, get corruptible humans out of this loop
- sp332 3y agoThat's part of it, but the bulk is for personal use. And then another fraction is just from people who don't take the patient's pain seriously or are afraid of possible effects, and think they're doing something morally correct by dumping it.
- hunglee2 3y agogood point re: personal use. I am sure that is how it starts, before then resale coming along in addition. Whatever the case, it seems a robot nurse would eventually be preferable here!
- salawat 3y agoThere will be zero cases of a system implemented with zero corruptible humans in the loop. Furthermore, it may very well be the case the ideal amount of corruptibility is non-zero. Things like roadway transit systems on the whole flow better with some fraction of non-compliant drivers to bust up clusters of compliant ones. The ideal amount of fraud is theorized to also be non-zero. Human systems seem to have a penchant for weirdness like that.
- hunglee2 3y agoyeah good point
