Cycling Fallacies
- Baldbvrhunter 3y agoAs someone who cycled every day for 10 years, including Finland in Winter, plenty of this is cope. Good luck braking on icy roads. Finland was easier because it is generally snow, not ice. UK winters / wet weather is terrible. You get covered in filthy spray. Cycling on mixed vehicle roads is dangerous. I've had 3 different car drivers try to push me out of the way with their cars - for no reason other than being there. Car drivers do not respect you. I've also hit a pedestrian who wasn't looking. Infrastructure built without cyclists in mind is a hazard.
- syndicatedjelly 3y agoCalling these things "fallacies" is the only fallacy on this page. A fallacy is the use of invalid or otherwise faulty reasoning in the construction of an argument. This page is half counterarguments to common cycling concerns, and half pedantic nitpicking of words. Saying that "cycling is safe, it's cars that kill cyclists" is like saying "mountaineering is safe, it's just gravity that kills people". People have every right to be concerned about most of this. I say this as an avid cyclist. Spreading shitty counterarguments is a great way to make people think cyclists are stupid..
- isthatafact 3y agoThe site content seems to be aimed toward policy makers who potentially have the power to improve infrastructure for cycling, and who may have little or no experience cycling for fitness or transportation. I cannot say whether the site is effective, but maybe some people do not realize that the reason no one is cycling "here" is because the roads are too dangerous, and it does not have to be that way.
