European Windows Are Awesome [video]
- stop50 3y agoIs that such an important thing?
- TacticalCoder 3y agoWell it's something we use all the time. It's super convenient because there's no risk of the window suddenly opening wide-open should there be too much wind. And it's not just windows: there are doors that work like that too. And at night, during summer time, you can still create an airflow without letting your window fully open: so for thieves it's not as easy to get in as if you had let your window opened. Honestly I take it for granted: I'm surprised when I stumble on a window that doesn't have that mechanic.
- stop50 3y agoI absolutly take it for granted. Thats why im suprised about the hype
- vinniepukh 3y agoI really miss these windows from my time living in Europe. They are incredible at 1.) insulating heat 2.) insulating noise, and 3.) being convenient to open, close, and clean!
- db48x 3y agoIf you want these on your own house all you have to do is visit a home–improvement store and look for the casement windows. They probably have a whole aisle of choices to pick from.
- vinniepukh 3y agoA key feature of the windows linked by the OP is the ability to vertically open them for a slight gap. My quick search for casement windows at Lowe's (https://www.lowes.com/pl/Casement-windows-Windows-Windows-doors/4294736344 https://www.lowes.com/pl/Casement-windows-Windows-Windows-do...) didn't show a single one that has that feature.
- db48x 3y agoIf Lowes doesn’t have them, others will. Look for “Tilt & Turn” windows. They’re called that because they operate like a combination of an ordinary casement window plus a “hopper” or “awning” casement window.
- vinniepukh 3y agoThese would be illegal in most San Francisco homes.
- slater 3y agoHow so?
- vinniepukh 3y agoWindows have to be in the character of the neighborhood. Source: https://sfplanning.org/sites/default/files/documents/publications/Standards_Window_Replacement.pdf https://sfplanning.org/sites/default/files/documents/publica...
- stop50 3y agoSo Germany can build insulated windows that fit into historic houses, but in san fransisco its impossible?
- vinniepukh 3y agoInsulated windows are possible albeit extremely expensive in SF. They need to be: 1.) wooden 2.) vertically opening 3.) same style as the old windows The windows the OP posted are 100% illegal since they do not fit the character of existing windows (wooden and vertical).
- sudo_bangbang 3y agoFrom what I remember the venting state of the window is called 'auf kipp'. Not sure if the process is called 'kipping' though
- DemocracyFTW2 3y ago"kippen", "Kippfenster"
