Plenty of people sympathize with the Palestinians even after they voted for Hamas
- midasuni 3y agoVast majority of Gaza residents have never had the chance to vote for anyone. The last elections were 2006, vast majority are under aged 35 and thus too young to vote in 2006.
- johnnyworker 3y agoTo be more precise, roughly half of the population of Gaza is under the age of 15. Also: https://www.ipcinfo.org/ipcinfo-website/alerts-archive/issue-94/en/ https://www.ipcinfo.org/ipcinfo-website/alerts-archive/issue... > Between 8 December 2023 and 7 February 2024, the entire population in the Gaza Strip (about 2.2 million people) is classified in IPC Phase 3 or above (Crisis or worse). This is the highest share of people facing high levels of acute food insecurity that the IPC initiative has ever classified for any given area or country. But sure, let's leave it at "they voted for Hamas" -- when "Hamas is using them as shield, so..." doesn't cut it, that is.
- edgyquant 3y agoEven then during those elections there was only around 1/3 turnout
- praptak 3y agoNot quite. Hamas rules the Gaza strip only and even this isn't 100% grass roots. They used to get strong backing from Israel: https://www.timesofisrael.com/for-years-netanyahu-propped-up-hamas-now-its-blown-up-in-our-faces/ https://www.timesofisrael.com/for-years-netanyahu-propped-up...
- sxg 3y agoNot at all the same situation. Although imperfect, the UK has an actual functioning democracy while Palestine is an impoverished, semi-autonomous, largely refugee state partially controlled by Israel.
