AI can find your location in photos
- wayfinder 3y agoThere are people that can do this and you can also do this in the iPhone Photos app.
- acchow 3y agoThe iPhone Photos app reads the location metadata from your photo (which is added when you take the photo)
- d1sxeyes 3y agoNot necessarily. There is also a search mode which can find landmarks in your photos.
- Alifatisk 3y agoYes, you mean Visual Lookup right? It's using similar images found on the web. I don't think iPhone Photos feature comes close to this Ai model.
- d1sxeyes 3y agoYes I think that’s what it’s called. It depends on where you take your photos I suppose but certainly if there are no familiar landmarks, it can’t make inferences from the specific types of plant visible etc.
- thejohnconway 3y agoGeolocating photos is easy, an none of this should come as a surprise. Anyone following the war in Ukraine will know that even photos taken inside have been successfully geolocated. Everyone should assume that photos give your location. (The example in the article of a 35 mile miss us actually surprisingly inaccurate, given that it included a horizon of mountains.)
- jeffrallen 3y agoThe other day I challenged Bard to do this, and it failed. I gave it hints and it got so confused it told me the flag of Switzerland was black, white, blue and yellow. Don't quit your day job, Bard.
- jacooper 3y agoMan Bard is so bad it's crazy, I don't know they still have the audacity to clams it's close to Gpt3.5 let alone GPT-4.
- Alifatisk 3y ago> In fact, Google already has a feature known as "location estimation," which uses AI to guess a photo's location. Is this something I can apply to my pictures? If not, that's a bummer because this feature would be very useful!
- SushiHippie 3y agohttps://petapixel.com/2022/12/09/google-photos-is-dumbing-down-its-location-estimation-feature/ https://petapixel.com/2022/12/09/google-photos-is-dumbing-do... Looks like its a feature inside of google photos
- hulitu 3y agoYou have a "save location" knob in the settings of the camera app in Android. It will add your location to your picture metadata.
- bbstats 3y agoRainbolt could do it better
- gwern 3y agoThe article says they beat Rainbolt head to head.
- djmips 3y agoI'm not surprised because even myself with all the available resources of the 'net am able with good results find where someone is from photos. The easiest is finding out where a YouTuber is if they go outside... I never shared my results - I only did it out of curiousity - could this be done - I also located a random photo someone took out of their airplane window of the ground... It takes persistence and the same kind of logic as debugging.
- jacooper 3y ago> The Stanford graduate students are well aware of the risks. They've written a paper on their technique, which they co-authored along with their professor, Chelsea Finn — but they've held back from making their full model publicly available, precisely because of these concerns, they say. Bummer.
