I think this is a cynical and fatalistic view which considers only some selective viewpoints. I think you'll find that real people are far less materialistic and shallow than you assume, and choose not to have large families for many reasons. Cultures will adapt! Humans are dynamic creatures. That's not to say we shouldn't consider the consequences of these changes and provide incentives and disincentives to nudge things one way or another, and manage the demographic shifts in order to lessen their shocks.
