- kleiba 3y ago...in which he sets up evil-mode to get more of a vim workflow.
- fransje26 3y agoIn a twist worthy of a Christmas fairytale miracle, the emacs users recognised the error of their ways, and embraced the workflow their hearts had secretly always longed for: vim. Peace returned to the kingdom, RSI was defeated, they lived happily ever after and had many children.
- trashburger 3y agoI don't quite see it that way. Spacemacs' motto sums it up best: "The best editor isn't Emacs or Vim, it's Emacs and Vim!" Mixing and matching the strengths of both editors results in a much better experience.
- ParetoOptimal 3y agoYou have to go further for ideal IMO. Evil and evil-collection integrates pretty well, but Meow integrates perfectly and uses the action visible first approach. https://github.com/meow-edit/meow https://github.com/meow-edit/meow
- Koshkin 3y agoNow vim, too, can use the whole of eight megabytes and be constantly swapping!
- brabel 3y agoAnd a whole lot of other config which most people wouldn't need. By the way, notice that use-package is now built into emacs (you don't need to install it since Emacs 29).
- evanjrowley 3y agoFinally, an Emacs guide for people like me.
- swah 3y agoPurple screenshot looks great - whats the font there? edit: PragmataPro Liga
- tmtvl 3y agoFrom the first part: (use-package emacs :init (set-face-attribute 'default nil :font "PragmataPro Mono Liga" :height 160))
- pixelHD 3y agoIn part 1[0] of this series of posts, the author mentions they use Pragmata Pro [1]. - bloopernova 3y agoPragmataPro is pretty good, but if you don't want to pay for a font, then the free Iosevka font is fairly similar I think.
- LanzVonL 3y agoThe .ttf is a simple Google search away.
- tecoholic 3y agoGreat article. I currently use Doom Emacs and this series is making me question if I really need it. The two articles have covered almost 80% of my workflow. The 3rd article might round it to 100.
- blagie 3y agoI enjoyed reading this. I'm not criticizing, but having used emacs for more than a quarter-century now, I keep things a lot more vanilla. My .emacs file is 63 lines right now. If you have emacs with vim keybindings, a purple flying toaster, and a whole bunch of custom hotkeys, if you ssh into a server, set up a new machine, or use a friends' computer, it's all very foreign. It's not in your muscle memory. Generic emacs works the same everywhere. My typical .emacs disables the flash screen, the top menu + toolbar, loads a few modes for the programming languages I currently work in, configures paths for my local machine, and has two or three minor custom scripts. That's it. I've gone through the same exercise as OP did one I first started using emacs, and I highly recommend doing the same. You learn a lot about how emacs works. Sharing it is good too. I learn a few new things each time I read one of these, and even sometimes add a line or two to my .emacs. However, not long after I did my super-custom-emacs, I upgraded machines, and was back to vanilla emacs, and I've been very happy there ever since.
- f1shy 3y agoI‘ve always tried to use defaults, not only in Emacs, but pretty much everthing. Unless I work 24x7 with a tool, I go away from customization, because of mentioned reasons. Also, defaults are generally not very bad, there was some thought into defining the default.
- Buttons840 3y agoIf I'm ssh'ed into a server, I just use vim. (I am using vim keybindings in Emacs after all.)
- rgrmrts 3y agoAlternatively, there’s tramp so you’re only opening the file from a remote path with emacs running locally
- ParetoOptimal 3y agoWhy optimize for using someone else's computer? Do you do it that often? The rare times I do I find muscle memory comes back. If it didn't I'd enable ssh on their machine and use tramp.
