I don't think it's realistic to expect evidence. Psychology, sociology, etc. don't have the methods to provide them. There are way too many confounds. Even if e.g. the idea "that women in less developed nations are more likely to choose STEM fields" were absolutely true, what could you do about it? Make life more miserable to force women to take up STEM?
