I have been using plain text accounting for almost a decade with my wife. Specifically, I use beancount (https://beancount.github.io/docs/ https://beancount.github.io/docs/) and a custom set of scripts that I have developed to categorize expenses and other features (https://github.com/luciano-fiandesio/beanborg/ https://github.com/luciano-fiandesio/beanborg/) I reckon is not for everyone, since a lot of stuff takes place in the terminal, but it has been working very well for us.
