Show HN: Meal planning app I built after losing 50kg myself in 2022
1500cals is a calorie and excercise tracking tool that I built after losing 50kg myself in 2022 through simply watching what I ate and starting to exercise.
The main "trick" I uncovered is simply to plan meals ahead. It sounds boring, it sounds annoying, but really its such a tiny effort for such outsized and life changing rewards that it should be a no-brainer.
The existing tools I found were more focused on tracking after eating which is great in terms of capturing data and measuring over time, but I found really didn’t help me with locking in a routine. I wanted to fix this and bring some of this planning side along with tracking into an easy to use app. This is 1500cals!
- quickthrower2 3y ago50kg! Thats a major achievement, well done. I like the idea. One of my favourite diets is the CSIRO diet but the drawback is it takes much more time to find the ingredients (supermarkets seem not optimized to find specific things or help you know they don’t have it). Thats what I would like to see - not just X calories but the macros, micros and having alternative ingredients and generally easier to find stuff.
- tapster 3y agoThanks! Had to google CSIRO. Looks interesting! My strategy was basically limit to 1500 calories a day, cut carbs as much as possible (no bread, pasta, rice) and make sure to eat protein. My app lets you add nutrients as well as calories, but I hid that part in the form as its a bit too complicated I thought. Will add back soon :D
- burrish 3y agoCongrats on the weight loss ! Any chance for an android app one day ?
- tapster 3y agoThanks! Yes, I built this all with Rails and Turbo Native so in theory, an Android app might not be too hard. I'd need to learn a bit about how Android handles steps/exercise and calorie tracking. For now the web version is pretty good too, but lacks the automatic calorie/workout stuff.
