Show HN: Fontimize, subset fonts to exactly your website's used characters
- 082349872349872 3y agoEspecially useful for ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, with its grand total of 5 vowels and 8 consonants?
- vintagedave 3y agoVery likely. A typical font has a huge number of glyphs: a language that uses only 13 letters would use even less space than a language that uses 26. I'd heard before of font subsetting for character sets like, say, Latin. But Fontimize doesn't subset to language ranges like that: it analyses exactly what's used. So if you wrote a webpage in Hawaiian, and used only 12 letters not all 13 (the same way in English you might not use Q or Z often), the font would contain only the glyphs for those 12. Note by this stage you're already talking half a megabyte or more down to a few kilobytes. So the difference at this stage of even fewer characters is minimal :)
