Just do: .SECONDEXPANSION foo: $$(patsubst %.c,%.o,$$(wildcard *.c)) No need to tell Make how to invoke a C compiler for the billionth time.

Just do:
.SECONDEXPANSION
foo: $$(patsubst %.c,%.o,$$(wildcard *.c))

- rurban 3y agoBut then you need the name it GNUmakefile when you use incompatible GNU extensions. BSD makefiles do look better.
