Exactly my feelings too. The reality of tech, especially big tech, is much more mundane. The vast majority of engineers work on maintaining and (slowly) upgrading the products that we use every day -- search, mail, maps, video. Each of these have thousands of engs that work on stable projects -- not wildly innovative, but not bullshit either.
