- 5350-uiop-1130 3y agoit's a tool. if you use it in a disciplined and purposeful way then it's great. but i believe it's a reflection of what we are. algorithms are mostly designed to give people more of what they want, and what they want is mostly passive entertainment. the main issue for me is attention. social media diminishes attention span and i see it's affects spreading into wider cultural and social implications.
- soupfordummies 3y agoTool for what though? The cons far outweigh the pros anyway. Even the pros are done better elsewhere IMO: Connecting with family and friends? Calling/texting is better. Groups? Forums are better.
- trilbyglens 3y agoWhile your points are true, they are a really poor defense of social media. There are plenty of toxic behaviors that we possess, which we are aware of, and legislate for. We have a pretty well founded baseline for what things are dangerous to us physically, but have not yet codified what is dangerous for us socially or psychologically. Social media is dangerous in these modes. Eventually we will recognize what an utterly destructive thing our current crop of social media platforms are, and in hindsight they will seem insane things that our descendants will shake their heads about.
- whateveracct 3y agoprobably. it's subconscious manipulative stuff the article is a solid survey of the current landscape.
- throw_a_grenade 3y agoIt's an international conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

- kakaz 3y agoStupid? Maybe. Hysterical. That is what's they are used for. Remember that guys called activists? Pays by the biggest money to make you convinced world will end within next 20 years because of myriad of Malthusian factors? Exactly.
