One thing I don't see mentioned anywhere is security. Software in the past was highly insecure, today the amount of checks and countermeasures is very high. By itself each check add an almost unnoticeable amount, but it adds up. Not saying it isn't necessary though (even though sometimes it shouldn't, you don't have anything to secure if you don't have data at all, but ads, tracking, and similar needs it).
This is similar to other elements, like households appliances. They now also seem less "reliable" than in the past, but take an old simple toaster, and it is probably a fire hazard.
