I grew up in Detroit and for a long time it had an amazing public school program for music and the arts. I received an instrument of my choosing (a violin) and instructions on how to play it. I also received regular instruction in art appreciation. I was never much of a fiddle player but became a gained a lifelong appreciation for the arts. How one guy is able by sheer force of will fund and drive a program of this magnitude is inspiring to me. The Detroit school programs birthed all the artists from Motown, healthy communities of rappers and jazz musicians as well as techno and proto punk.
