It is a tremendous amount of work to tread on a new path. Although at times exciting, it's often just scary and you have a huge downside risk and only a minor upside benefit. Breaking with even one widely held assumption creates a huge burden and if you break with more than one, which I think is necessary, is exponentially harder. And there is no single project which benefits from this extra overhead. The impetus has to come from within and it's very personal like an artist feeling a need to express themselves no matter the cost.
