"gaming curbs" here means limiting spending in games, likely microtransctions.
> All online games will be required to set limits on users recharging their accounts, and pop-up alerts should be used to warn and remind users of "irrational spending," according to the draft rules issued by the National Press and Publication Administration, China's gaming regulator.
Sounds like good regulation to me, imo games with microtransactions should be treated like gambling, or at least have some of the same safeguards in place if we see people getting addicted. Another cool thing to have would be an opt out (self ban) feature.
- dragontamer 3y agoMy barber was complaining just yesterday that her aunt spent $5000 on some mobile game and is in big trouble with her husband. These Gatchapon games are supposed to be just a bit of spending for a bit of fun. But it seems like there is a real gambling problem in their design. Many people cannot help themselves and turn into 'whales'. Then again, the sole purpose of these games is to extract money from their customer base, 'whaling' by design. Why make a game that gets $60 or $70 from every customer when there are so many people out there willing to spend $5000, $10,000 or $20,000 on this crappier, user-hostile model?
