It is clear that the car is designed in a country with essentially zero roundabouts. It is very hard to blink «out» of a roundabout when your steering wheel (or yoke) is upside down.
The lack of handle for blinkers and handle for cruise is why my next car will be a mercedes. I have the older X with physical handles now.
Or maybe I should say part of why, it’s almost embarassing to drive a Tesla these days with Commander Dunnig-Kruger at the helm of the company :(
- Vecr 3y agoI'm not sure the steering wheel even flips over, if it's steer by wire like the comment says, you could easily program a law that changes the response of the steering depending on the vehicle's speed, preventing it from getting too twitchy at highway speeds while still allowing parking, even with only a 180 degree (for example) rotation from lock to lock. Toyota/Lexus has already done so.
- PartiallyTyped 3y agoIIRC from Marquez Brown Lee's review, the steering changes at different speeds exactly to avoid it being twitchy.
- demondemidi 3y agoPower steering has been doing that since the 1950s. It has always been differential.
- emmelaich 3y agoBy-wire makes it tuneable in the field.
- demondemidi 3y agoAnd unpredictable.
- gobengo 3y ago> a country with essentially zero roundabouts there are thousands of roundabouts
- rlv-dan 3y agoWow, thousands! In a country with 300m people... My home town with 300k people probably has well over a hundred roundabouts. They are everywhere.
- notTooFarGone 3y agoYou describe a state in germany. Having driven in the us and in Europe for thousands of kilometres, the amount of roundabouts in US cities is negligible.
- underwater 3y agoIndicating when exiting a roundabout isn't a law everywhere, but it is where I live. This makes the new Model 3 and other Tesla's a non-starter for me. I'm not hunting for an indicator button when turning.
- emmelaich 3y agoThe steer-by-wire progressive steering makes it nimble enough to beat a go-kart around a go-kart track. I think it'd do fine on a roundabout. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh6qGSlEzsk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh6qGSlEzsk
- olivermuty 3y agoYeah there is no steer by wire on tm3 or the plaids, as far as I can see. The review I looked at when considering the new plaid X (before Musk went completely batshit crazy) specifically said that blinking out of roundabouts was almost impossible to do without giving it waaay (as in traffic dangerous) too much attention. The steer by wire thing fo sho makes it better, but I still want stalks for this stuff.
