The value of a degree is based on exclusivity under any system. We can gatekeep on difficulty to pass and not on money. There is no need for a preselection/admissions process when courses can scale infinitely over the internet. That is a relic of a time where a lecture could only be given in a room with a limited number of seats. The only thing limiting degree issuance can be the ability to pass the classes.
