Ask HN: Is YouTube a Public Utility?
Being a part of the internet but under private jurisdiction, at first glance YouTube does not seem like a public utility...
But can it be considered one?
- macguyvermectin 3y agoNo, and it shouldn’t be treated as one. Nobody needs YouTube, and the only videos on YouTube that can’t be replaced with blogs are music videos and cat videos.
- akerl_ 3y agoWhy would Youtube be any more of a public utility than any other commercial entity?
- p-e-w 3y agoBecause it directly influences the daily routines and opinions of 2.5 billion people, which is almost a third of the entire global population? The idea that the same rules should apply to such entities as to "any other business" is nothing short of insane.
- kamphey 3y agoSome public utilities started as private enterprises.
