Nobody is going to cheer for Apple if they just want to kill Nvidia to take their spot. I see this sentiment written so often that I almost wish Apple would just let Mac users have Nvidia GPUs again, because clearly the demand is enormous.
- arthurcolle 3y agoWhat's the point? They have unified memory
- smoldesu 3y agoUnified memory doesn't stop you from implementing PCI, Apple did it on the Mac Pro.
- ngcc_hk 3y agoI do not cheer as well. But you need to break the monopoly. One way is somehow open source like linux onto windows. Great. But on desktop linux … we need macOS vs windows so we have competition and choice. Of course we hope then some free … like windows linux subsystem or the command line of macOS … Just be realistic. Or at least hope for alternatives and competition.
- smoldesu 3y ago"realistic" in this case means accepting that CUDA will never be replaced. Parts of it will get replaced (the easy bits, like matrix multiplication), but there are thousands of esoteric CUDA features that don't make financial sense to rewrite. They exist for automotive, robotics/automation, industry, gaming and datacenter customers. Only the AI parts will get rewritten, and even that has taken Apple half a decade. I hope for alternatives and competition, but that's why I grieve OpenCL. Open CUDA alternatives are the only way you can drive Nvidia's customers away from them; Apple abandoned that dream a while ago. If they were still cooperating with Khronos and the rest of the industry, then there would be hope for dethroning Nvidia.
