While running only a small percentage of the time. Some only operate a few hundred hours a year, let's say 300 hours (around 3.4% of the time). These low operating hours are much more likely to happen as short term storage and renwables get expanded. French nuclear reactors run around 60% of the time and have very little variable costs. Thus new nuclear reactors would have to be only 5% of the cost of gas peakers when run most of the time, as would be economically reasonable, to beat gas peakers.
- zozbot234 3y agoGas peakers are relatively cheap to build but have to pay for their fuel, so running them a small % of the time absolutely makes sense. Nuclear is much more of a baseload source.
