In this age frowning upon “cultural appropriation” it cannot be yelled aloud enough that rewriting the human journey in the voice and context of each age is a necessary part of our story telling culture.
Any retelling which gets attention beyond a hundred years later is worth having been written.
As to this offering being counted among the authors best works, I would like to point out that it is common for “outsiders” to produce pivotal works emulating other cultures on account of their naive and enchanted perspective seeing what the host culture takes for granted.
I enjoy seeing as many versions of the Arabian Nights as I enjoy stories of Sinbad, which themselves are contributions of yet other authors’ emulations.
