Project SCUM
- I_Am_Nous 3y agoI'm just old enough to remember seeing the Marlboro Man cowboy commercials before they were no longer allowed to advertise on TV. I remember I liked them because they had majestic herds of horses and beautiful landscapes. My dad also smoked Marlboro so I easily could have become a "replacement smoker" just because I associated Marlboro with beauty and majesty and it was normalized by an authority figure. It's probably one reason why I'm so rabidly against being advertised to. Nobody is going to keep me or my son safe but me. Current things commonly advertised in America that I don't want to be normalized to my son: sports betting, alcohol=partying, materialism, phone sex lines (really sexualized ads of any kind THEY ARE ALL SO HORNY), or just outright scams. Besides, every company is hoping to bore a hole deep in your brain to implant themselves into your life so you give them your money. Watching advertising feels like willingly allowing the installation of a brain worm. I hate it.

- chupapimunyenyo 3y agoYou can't protect your child and there's no guarantee that he will be safe. Think about cancer and random events like school shooters. All of this happens daily and you can't prevent it
- I_Am_Nous 3y agoProtect, no. Prepare? Yes. I'm not sheltering him, I'm helping him be aware of what the world is trying to get out of him. What's the point of bringing this up anyway? I'm talking about limiting my son's ad exposure and you are saying "it doesn't matter he could get shot at school."
