Is it possible for me to submit a site in HN?
t shows "Sorry, your account isn't able to submit this site". I am pretty sure I comply with the HN guidelines:
https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- kammygood 3y agop.s. my site is https://futurehurry.com https://futurehurry.com not sure if it is related to my site
- nkurz 3y agoFrom the guidelines you link, it says "Please don't use HN primarily for promotion. It's ok to post your own stuff part of the time, but the primary use of the site should be for curiosity." It certainly sounds like you are posting to HN primarily for promotion of your own site and that the system is correctly preventing you from doing so. I'd be interested to know how it decides to block this particular site, though!
- kammygood 3y agoHi nkurz! Thank you for your concern, but I want to clarify that my intention is not to promote my site. I just want to get feedback on anything that could be improved on my site and see if any user experience can be improved. I apologize if my post caused any misunderstanding. I'm here to engage in conversations in HN and share information with you all.
- nkurz 3y agoIt's not clear to me how you wanting feedback on your site helps the rest of the HN community---it feels a lot like promotion to me. But if you want to proceed, you should heed the other suggestion in the guidelines: "Please don't post on HN to ask or tell us something. Send it to hn@ycombinator.com." Dan is generally responsive, although the response might not be the one you want.
- _Microft 3y agoThere are karma thresholds that unlock certain features, an example being able to downvote a comment. There might be some mechanism in place that prevents new (or not active yet) users from submitting URLs. You had no prior comments or submissions here and also had not gained any karma yet. Maybe try again after participating here for a while. You can find undocumented features of HN here: https://github.com/minimaxir/hacker-news-undocumented https://github.com/minimaxir/hacker-news-undocumented
- kammygood 3y agoHi _Microft! Thank you so much for sharing that valuable resource! I've had a look at the GitHub link you provided, and it's incredibly useful. I appreciate the insight into the undocumented features of Hacker News. I must admit, I'm not fully familiar with the hidden culture of Hacker News, and I apologize if my initial engagement seemed to overlook certain norms. I'm eager to become more involved in the community and look forward to participating in discussions here. Thanks again for the guidance!
- _Microft 3y agoYou're welcome. I hope you're going to enjoy the community!
- PaulHoule 3y agoA lot of people don't seem to understand that Hacker News is a community. If you turn on the "showdead" flag you will see there are many sad people who keep posting posts from their blog and no other web site and are hellbanned and don't seem to know it. There are people who actually use Hacker News on a regular basis and then there are the people who invaded from some place like https://villains.fandom.com/wiki/Boskone https://villains.fandom.com/wiki/Boskone who didn't need Hacker News at all until the day that their bosses' boss boss told their bosses's boss to tell their boss to tell you to post a link to HN and then they are quite shocked to find they're treated differently from people who regularly use the site.
- codingdave 3y agoYou're not wrong, but I try to assume that people who come here for self-promotion just need to be educated on the right way to do things. A new account posting their new product as a "Show HN:" is often accepted, so I recommend people try that. In doing so, we can help people get the feedback they desire the HN crowd without assuming they are "sad people" just because they don't know our somewhat unique culture round these parts.
- kammygood 3y agocodingdave, thank you so much for the heads up! This is very helpful for people like me who are still getting the hang of things here. Thank you very much for your good intentions and advice. What a blessing to have met such a kind person like you! cheers!
- kammygood 3y agoHi PaulHoule, really appreciate for sharing your insights, and I've learned valuable lessons from your comment. I realize now that I may have overlooked the crucial elements of participation and engagement that define the HN community. Moving forward, I am committed to better understanding and respecting the dynamics here. Thanks again for shedding light on this aspect, and I look forward to being a more active and respectful member of this community.
