I have friends in different continents and the three main messengers I need to communicate are WhatsApp, Telegram and WeChat. Then most people also would like to use Instagram Direct Messages but I don't have an account there.
People in eastern Europe largely use Telegram and people in China use WeChat. Everyone else mostly WhatsApp. I don't exactly know how it is in the US though, perhaps iMessage is more popular there.
