Tell HN: Reddit is blocking access from AWS IP addresses
Trying to access reddit.com from an AWS device results in a 403 response, with a page displaying the following message:
whoa there, pardner! Your request has been blocked due to a network policy. Try logging in or creating an account https://www.reddit.com/login/ to get back to browsing. If you're running a script or application, please register or sign in with your developer credentials https://www.reddit.com/wiki/api/. Additionally make sure your User-Agent is not empty and is something unique and descriptive and try again. if you're supplying an alternate User-Agent string, try changing back to default as that can sometimes result in a block. You can read Reddit's Terms of Service https://www.reddit.com/wiki/api/. if you think that we've incorrectly blocked you or you would like to discuss easier ways to get the data you want, please file a ticket https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. when contacting us, please include your ip address which is: <redacted> and reddit account
This occurs when using a browser with the default UA via remote desktop to an EC2, not just using cli tools like curl
- KomoD 3y agoGood, they should be. You can still use RSS or the API all you want, but AWS ips have no legitimate reason to access the actual site.
- andreareina 3y ago$country blocks Reddit and I already have a server on AWS so I use it as an ad-hoc proxy? https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/sg95q7/countries_where_reddit_is_banned/ https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/sg95q7/countries_w...

- TheLobitzz 3y agoSame from here. I read reddit from the cli using rtv (Python). I just tried now and can't access it. Anyone know of a fix for rtv?
- TheLobitzz 3y agoSame here. I usually access reddit from rtv (Python package) from an EC2 linux instance, and today I wasn't able to. Any tip on how to bypass or fix this with rtv?
