Feels more like angst at price gouging and other factors. We've got a 1.8B (or 1.6? Forget…) judgement against home realtors in one state. We've got legal action against rental firms colluding on price fixing in other jurisdictions. And reported market confidence levels no longer follow traditional factors like they did in the past (ie income, etc). I also wouldn’t discount previously unaccounted for variables like political unrest and unease (or perceived political instability and norm breakdowns). Exogenous factors can breakdown previously held associations. They mention continued fall out from covid here. Which, btw, I think we still have not seen a market correction towards worker wages and conditions on the order seen after the 1918 pandemic. Localities attempting to overturn child labor laws and legalize child labor could be playing an unexpected (exogenous) factor.
Put another way, if people are suddenly worried about things they've never had to worry about in the past, like losing freedoms they previously had, they might not be capable of reporting the previous levels of consumer confidence all other things held the same except the loss of freedoms.
Dual problem to suddenly at work theres a poltergeist who you 100% interact with daily and which scares you but otherwise doesn’t affect your income prospects, housing costs, transportation, food, etc. Or change poltergeist for a work bully.
