Well...yeah. With some free time about a year ago I did a bunch of the Reddit ads formula modules and then veered off into reading threads from actual users who were seeking guidance on how to leverage the platform this way (without paying Reddit to run a campaign) and they all discuss this practice.
On the 'official' side, Reddit publishes the things you'd expect:
- run your ads on our cool platform to reach your customers of tomorrow...today!
- case study/success stories/etc
- Reddit is a great platform to improve sentiment about your_brand!
On the 'un-official' end, users discuss how to circumvent actually paying the platform to achieve their desired results and rely on astroturfing or other clandestine methods because it's much cheaper with a much more attractive upside if a conversion is landed. There is also a lot of scammer accounts that send junk like this: https://imgur.com/a/q106SKI https://imgur.com/a/q106SKI
