One aspect of this that independent site admins often have to deal with is CSAM filtering. Many jurisdictions require it in some form but by definition you can't "roll your own" automated solution because how could you? Centralized solutions like PhotoDNA are not available to most people.
With most other things I can see open source solutions prevailing, with this I can't. This will likely be the thing killing the decentralized Internet of ye olden days for good.
- goatmeal 3y agoit's prohibitively expensive to access these tools. I have to identify myself and pay over £1000 to be allowed to access them. the agency either doesn't care about independent sites catching CSAM or they don't want independent admins finding out that these tools aren't very effective. alex gleason the fediverse dev tried contacting them about this problem and they didn't care at all.
