Less a story than an anecdote. Not even a real take away presented, just a nice 'do unto others' note. Would he have been paid without sending the Xmas gift? As likely yes, as no.
- mooreds 3y agoI'm the author. I firmly believe I would not have ever been paid if I hadn't been persistent. The turnover at the firm, the fact it was under stress and the fact they didn't need my work any more all led me to believe that I would have gone to the bottom of the creditors list. I believe my polite persistence prevented that from happening. It was a substantial sum of money to me. The larger point, which perhaps my anecdote didn't drive home, was that as a contractor you need to be concerned with getting the work, doing the work and getting paid for the work. As employees, we often focus on that middle step, unless we work in sales or accounting. That's a luxury.

For me, the best take away was this note on appreciation: "Even though they were stiffing me for thousands of dollars, I still appreciated the money they’d paid me and the work they’d let me do." That has stuck with me since I read it, and helped me improve my attitude in adverse circumstances as well.
