I can't find the essay now, but I once read a very well argued historical essay that put forward the theory that the reason that the church focused _so much_ on homosexuality is that because priests are supposedly _celibate_ and had to swear off relationships with women, a large percentage of priests were (and are) gay, and so it seemed to the church organization that homosexuality was both far more prevalent than it was and also an that it was an urge that was especially hard to suppress.
