"I don’t have a formal background in biology." Neither do I but I can tell this article is ignorant and ideologically misguided. Pretty much every section is chock full of dumb stuff to object to. but the overall hubris is outstanding. Especially considering he almost certainly used GPT-4 to fill in details about genetics and neuroscience he doesn't actually understand.
I am genuinely amazed that there's an entire "Why hasn’t someone already done this?" section that doesn't mention "nobody has a single clue how a nematode's brain works and that's only 150 neurons, so perhaps we should be more modest about what we can do with a human brain." More generally, the entire argument falls apart completely if you understand that intelligence isn't even understood well-enough to be defined scientifically, let alone manipulated genetically in a specific species...let alone manipulated genetically in a primate...let alone genetically manipulated in the fanciest primate! Why would you write this article without even mentioning simple invertebrates?
I know I am being mean, but this stuff is embarrassingly stupid. It's not just tech, but certain tech/tech-adjacent people think their ideologies around intelligence are the same thing as scientific facts about intelligence.
