High dose dietary Vitamin D allocates surplus calories to muscle and growth [pdf]
- kid64 3y agoI'm not a doctor, but readers are encouraged to research the known risks of Vitamin D overconsumption in humans.
- HarHarVeryFunny 3y agoIs there any consensus on the level at which it becomes dangerous rather than (perhaps) beneficial? I was taking Vitamin D supplements during the first year (or two?) of covid due to doctors reports that it was beneficial for that. I forget the amount I was taking - one capsule per day (125 mcg?) of some supermarket brand. If it's safe at this sort of daily level, and if this report is true, then seems tempting to start again, especially due to having an indoor job and limited outdoor/sunshine time, although perhaps a safe daily dose isn't enough to induce the muscle-vs-fat production this report is discussing ?
- phyzome 3y agoFrankly, it's not even clear at this point whether it is beneficial for anything other than preventing rickets.

- phyzome 3y ago...in mice. Also, this is just a preprint.

- Robotbeat 3y agoThis sounds like something I’d like to see replicated…
- jey 3y agoWake me up after the replication in humans.

- zingababba 3y agoYou must get a lot of sleep, make sure to get your vitamin D levels checked.
- bratwurst3000 3y agoDoes someone know what the percentage of mice study successfully replicated in human studies is ?
- booleanbetrayal 3y agoI'm beginning to worry that we're giving mice too much of an edge ...
- sciencesama 3y agovitamin d is a steroid !! it is not a simple vitamin !!
- Traubenfuchs 3y agoVitamin D is one of the few nutrients you can overdose and it can destroy your inner organs, muscuskeletal system and brain. If you decide to take high dosages of vitamin D you must get your blood values checked regularly.
- rtkwe 3y agoIt's a preprint and a weirdly basically formatted one at that I'm going to wait on some peer review before I start playing with vitamin D in high doses, given it's toxic at high doses in humans. The high dose here is 10k IU/kg which is... a lot in a human, you're looking at basically instantly toxic if you follow that in a person.
- andrewmg 3y agoSo what about humans? According to a 2021 meta-analysis[0], Vitamin D has "no effect" on muscle growth and may even have a negative effect, particularly at high doses. [0] https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8090233/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8090233/

- alecco 3y agoYour link seems to support the opposite of your advice. Tryptophan by-product seems to be bad. > "We are trying to figure out why the changes are happening and if we can target those cells to make them want to make bone again," McGee-Lawrence said. > [...] > A major culprit in their breakdown appears to be the metabolite kynurenine, a byproduct of the essential amino acid tryptophan. > [...] > Over time, kynurenine piles up and appears to alter the dynamic of bone and muscle formation.
- instagib 3y agoSupplementation of 2,000IU/kg and 10,000IU/kg seems like a lot to test in humans rather than mice in the study. Most I’ve seen is 50,000IU once per week for 4-6 weeks then do another blood test and go back to a normal 1000-2000IU/day dose. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8709011/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8709011/ There are some more studies in humans that show higher levels of vitamin D are correlated with higher levels of testosterone and other androgens. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21154195 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21154195 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20050857/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20050857/ 146 studies on vitamin D per examine.com. https://examine.com/supplements/vitamin-d/#references https://examine.com/supplements/vitamin-d/#references
