- Rochus 3y agoThanks (though I think paywalled articles should not be posted here). The most interesting take-away from the article for me is the reference to this study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29065280/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29065280/ (here is a non-paywalled version https://www.researchgate.net/publication/318865497_The_Narcissism_Epidemic_Is_Dead_Long_Live_the_Narcissism_Epidemic https://www.researchgate.net/publication/318865497_The_Narci...). Quotes: "We identified three narcissism factors in the preanalyses of the pooled data and interpreted them as leadership, vanity, and entitlement." "our results showed evidence that narcissism levels have been slowly declining from the 1990s to the 2010s" "no ethnic group showed the overall increase predicted by proponents of the narcissism epidemic" "the findings were consistent across men and women" So it doesn't seem to be as bad as one might conclude from observing social media; apparently narcissists are overrepresented on the latter (which wouldn't really be surprising).
- Vektorceraptor 3y agoThanks for the article. I'm thinking about society a lot, and I think I figured out some factors in promoting narcissism. "The modern internet seems designed to play to our own narcissistic tendencies." First - the IT sector. I would even add to the definition “comprising a pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), a constant need for admiration, and a lack of empathy” -> a constant need for information and validation. The internet has become a main source for information, either direct information or validation of information, and this causes in return the lack of empathy, because someone is constantly busy with their thoughts. It also causes the feeling of entitlement because through validation one gains a sense of truth. And it also creates a feeling of admiration because you constantly feel like you're doing the right thing and something important. I believe that we are a new type of narcissists who, embedded in an information society, define themselves through information and seek all the solutions in life in it and in the process become lonely, physically atrophy and have fears of each other. We invest so much in our beliefs that we become vulnerable to any challenge. Our commitment forces us to make it happen. edit: just to add the otehr points I forgot to mention: media, journalism, marketing, administration - Probably any kind of service jobs that consist primarily of information processing.
