I totally agree, but I see lots of projects with a site that looks a lot like an end user project, and some design choices that kind of seem like it's meant to be mainstream, without really being clear on what it's for. It took me a long time to learn not to expect too much, and my choice of projects has been very different since learning this. Some projects seem like they're held back by trying to be kinda-mainstream-ish, rather than being fully able to try whatever they want.
