I don't get this logic. When you have empowering technology, you get market expansion, demand induction, and usually have even more work to do. AI creates opportunities, there's going to be competition and this will create jobs.
I see it like Linux and OSS, of course it killed some paid software products, but it created a platform for companies to build even more and better than before. Devs still have jobs.
AI is a platform, it's even more accessible than OSS, easier to use in any domain and has lower entry barrier. It will support a lot of jobs, and will be the best method to quickly retrain people for their new positions.
What we're basically judging here is if automation and AI will progress faster than our greed. Will we ever say we have enough opportunities and we can stop our efforts now? I don't think so. People will work just like before because we can want more than we can get.
- losteric 3y agoIt's important to consider the rate of change and cost of job-switching. In America, there are no national programs for adult education, most Americans aren't aware of impending industry shifts, and 60% of Americans still live paycheck-to-paycheck without the time/money to adapt themselves. If AI replaces N repetitive customer service jobs with additional labor demand in engineering, product development, logistics, etc... hopefully new demand = N, but at the same time we really need to ask how practical it is for those N employees to fulfill the new demand. If they can't retrain, the result is some combination of higher wages for those with the skill, offshoring, and lower wages for those displaced into even less skilled labor.
- DenisM 3y agoYou’re picturing a system where high-skill jobs are created and low skill jobs are destroyed while the rest of the system remain static. Consider an alternative dynamic: High-skill jobs created by AI will drain the brains from the next lower level skill jobs, which will open up promotion opportunities from even lower skill levels, creating openings at those levels as well. It’s turtles all the way down. Not saying it’s true, but it could play out that way.
