AI is actually creating a high number of jobs for consultants and other attention grabbing based professions.

- xkqd 3y ago> AI is actually creating a high number of jobs for consultants and other attention grabbing based professions. Right, but I think maybe a lot of the backlash against AI is that no one feels bad or even has much sympathy for these folks. They get to eat, and they’re eating really well. I think people are a little more worried about the Joe and Jane’s who don’t carry computer science degrees.
- apwell23 3y agoI think Allie K Miller doesn't have a CS degree either
- sebastiennight 3y agoDo you genuinely believe that the AI consultants of 2023 were unemployed or in college in 2022? Or maybe... could these people possibly have been [insert fad here] consultants for years beforehand, and therefore no significant net new jobs have been created so far?
- pcurve 3y ago"According to a recent report of 750 business leaders using AI from ResumeBuilder, 37% say the technology replaced workers in 2023. Meanwhile, 44% report that there will be layoffs in 2024 resulting from AI efficiency." These are specific enough to be credible. If you talk to leaders in customer service / call center operations, they've been planning this for years. Is this creating some new AI jobs? Sure. But that's a separate issue because peopel who are getting laid off aren't the ones taking up those new jobs. The layoff has been happening. Over 240 workers in a call center were laid off this week in KB Bank (a Korean bank) because AI-based consultation tool reduced call center volume by 20%. Plenty of real life examples happening across the globe. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/10/03/ai-customer-service-jobs/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/10/03/ai-cust...
- hn_throwaway_99 3y agoAnother good WaPo article about marketers and copywriters getting laid off due to ChatGPT: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/06/02/ai-taking-jobs/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/06/02/ai-taki...
- addicted 3y ago> So they surveyed some people, asked for opinions and based on that wrote an article. You do realize some of the most useful BLS and Fed data is little more than surveying some people and asking for their opinions right? The vast majority of everything we as SW designers do is developed by surveying some users and asking opinions? What do you think user surveys and UX panels that drive so much of SW design is? It’s a completely legitimate way to get information about something. Like all forms of data it has its benefits and its downsides.
- civilized 3y agoProbably one of those PR firm-generated articles Paul Graham warned us about many years ago. Driving business to someone or other.
