If automation = obsoleting workers, then What would Marxism do? Keep workers doing manual labor?

  I'm not a marxist but if you're seriously asking this question, you might want to look up a short summary of Capital. Your question is one of the main points of the book. You'll be better served than asking around HN for this.

  That's not the equality being claimed, you left out the quite central "capitalist" modifier, so properly stated it is "capitalist automation = obsoleting workers". The Marxist response to automation is simply to let the workers have more leisure time.
