- interstice 3y agoMore importantly (from the point of view of capitalism) whose going to pay for things
- randomdata 3y agoRobots don’t work for free. Perhaps they will pay.

- mc32 3y agoIf automation = obsoleting workers, then What would Marxism do? Keep workers doing manual labor?
- zer0tonin 3y agoI'm not a marxist but if you're seriously asking this question, you might want to look up a short summary of Capital. Your question is one of the main points of the book. You'll be better served than asking around HN for this.
- lewhoo 3y agoDistribute the means of production.
- SiempreViernes 3y agoThat's not the equality being claimed, you left out the quite central "capitalist" modifier, so properly stated it is "capitalist automation = obsoleting workers". The Marxist response to automation is simply to let the workers have more leisure time.
- mensetmanusman 3y agoSomeone has to burn down Targets to rebuild them!
- beej71 3y agoAI will make it for us! Or something.
- dragonwriter 3y agoIn pure capitalism, the people that own capital would, and the people who didn't, wouldn't, where labor was unnecessary for production.
- pixl97 3y agoAh so the poor eating the rich and general society wide instability.
- ben_w 3y agoI'd say that's a likely outcome, but not the goal. Still, The Wealth of Nations is 1776 and The Communist Manifesto is 1848, and it shouldn't be a surprise that both look at bit naive with the benefit of hindsight. Hopefully there's some equivalent work for the impact of AI. Might already exist, I've not actually read "Fully Automated Luxury Communism: A Manifesto", merely some of The Culture novels from whence the title seems to have been borrowed.
- mensetmanusman 3y agoThe goal of capitalism is to fund capital equipment/assets that makes stuff better along some axis. This has the knock-on effect of creating massive wealth.
- heresie-dabord 3y agoNegative historical examples of what starving people do to survive are sufficient in number. But from a positive point of view, there is an entire food industry run by people making food for people. Food will be available. Growing food and bartering for goods and services are common among people. It's just that in the historical economic samples, there was relatively little wealth generated compared to today's economy. People in the future may have a Basic Income provided by the state. They may spend their time "day-trading", "click-farming", "video-viralising", or "brigading-for-dollars". ^_^
