ByteDance is using OpenAI's tech to build a competitor
- null0pointer 3y agoI can't read the whole article but from the first couple of paragraphs it sounds like ByteDance are using ChatGPT output to improve their own models. So the verge is upset that ByteDance are scraping a resource available on the internet to improve their models... the same thing OpenAI did to get their own training data? They call out that they're breaking the ToS but if OpenAI or Microsoft didn't ban their account yet then so what? Are the verge the ToS police now? Seems like a nothing story.
- Handy-Man 3y agoBecause they weren’t aware apparently. There’s a update, OpenAI banned their account. https://x.com/alexeheath/status/1735805122104680675?s=20 https://x.com/alexeheath/status/1735805122104680675?s=20

- sheepscreek 3y agoIt’s not a nothing story. ByteDance/TikTok is a big deal - the most downloaded app of 2023 I believe. Potentially a very bad thing for Oracle stock too. There can be more significant/material consequences for them (such as getting sued).
- fito 3y agoAww, the makers of that plagiarizing machine are upset that they're being plagiarized.
- benliong78 3y agoI don’t know man. I mean, google indexes the open web to create a search engine and we all seem to be fine with it. I do draw the line that if you want to build a LLM, there’s the internet for you, train your own damn model and stop piggybacking on someone else’s, or in China’s case, at least don’t get caught.
