Many tech workers don't think they're getting the training they need
- mikece 3y agoPersonally, I can't remember the last time I was actually trained by my employer: there has always been the expectation that I will train myself -- and on my own time. Some previous employers have paid for books or online training but not time on the clock to learn.
- billy99k 3y agoI don't think I've ever been trained. I'm so used to just getting put in front of an unknown project and made to figure it out, it's my default for any employer.
- hotpotamus 3y agoI couldn't even tell you what training I need. Most of what I do is just infrastructure stuff - networking, storage (block, file, and object), databases both SQL and no-SQL and some IaC using Ansible and Docker Swarm plus some odd bash, python, and a dash of java now and again. AWS has some training that mostly seems to be geared towards helping you sell your company on their proprietary versions of the above. I suppose a year or two I was supposed to be learning something about blockchain because that was all the rage? Now I guess I should be learning about AI? Because apparently I need to inject LLM generated bullshit somewhere into my infrastructure? I definitely feel like an old curmudgeon, but at this point I don't really know what it is that new tech is trying to accomplish; I'm more interested in refining the tools I already know and I feel are well-established, however that is boring to most who seem to be chasing some new, fashionable thing or other seeking either novelty or resume-building.
- _boffin_ 3y agoLol. Here’s the docs. Here’s the code base. We’ll help you with initial configs and some permission stuff. Go have fun.
